What the HECK?/Intro- Rasslin Tape 16 (Summer/Fall 1991)
Tape 16 starts off with SummerSlam 1991 and all the free TV matches that followed.
Like always, since reports of the SummerSlam PPV are quite abundant, I'll
just do a quick run-down. Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby "the Brain" Heenan and
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper are at ringside of Madison Sqaure Gardens to kick things off and
provide commentary.
SummerSlam Match 1: The Dragon, British Bulldog & Texas Tornado vs. Warlord,
Hercules & Paul Roma (w/Slick)
Texas Tornado is introduced WITH his proper name of "Kerry Von Erich", but no mention
of "Ricky Steamboat" or "Davey Boy Smith". Dragon and Roma work most
of the match and it ends with a Dragon high-cross body on Roma for the pin.
Mr. Perfect is backstage and has nasty words for Bret Hart. "The Coach" blows
his whistle for emphasis.
SummerSlam Match 2: WWF Intercontinental Championship:
Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Mr. Perfect (c) (w/Coach)
Y'know, just for the record, smart fans KNOW it's John Tolos as "Coach", but the WWF
never mentioned his real name on TV. Perfect tweaks his back early on, but finishes the match,
leading to
an injury that would keep him sidelined for awhile.
Bret counters a Perfect legdrop into the sharpshooter
for the submission victory and his first IC title. For the FOURTH year in a row, the IC
champion doesn't make it out of SummerSlam. Damn, ya'd think a savvy champ would
scheudle himself in a tag match, for once. Afterwards, Lord Alfred Hayes
is in the crowd to get a word
with Stu Hart and unintentionally disses him. Tough to see, but it looks like
Bruce Hart is there to congratulate Bret as well.
Sean Mooney is backstage with the Bushwhackers and their pal, Andre the Giant.
But first,it was not that long ago...when Jimmy Hart tried to sign Andre.
Andre declined, only to be attacked by Earthquake. Quake nailed Andre in the back
of the knee and "broke" Andre's leg.
SummerSlam Match 3: Bushwhackers (w/Andre the Giant) vs. Natural Disasters (w/Jimmy Hart)
(Butch Miller & luke Williams vs. Earthquake & Typhoon)
Whackers use the big mens' weight to slam them against each other, early on.
Quake ends it by dropping ass on Butch for the pin. Afterwards, Disasters try to
throw menacing glares at Andre. The Legion of Doom appears and faces them down. Faces
share hugs as they go up the aisle.
Bobby Heenan leaves the broadcast area to visit "Hulk Hogan's" dressing room.
Heenan challenges an unseen "Hogan" with the Real World's Championship ,on
behalf of Ric Flair. The door is slammed in Heenan's face.
Ted DiBiase is backstage to cackle at Virgil.
SummerSlam Match 4: Million Dollar Championship:
Virgil vs. "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase (w/Sensational Sherri)
Cameras tend to get Sherri from the waist up, and that's a shame. Sherri interferes to
trigger a DQ, but ref "Evil" Earl Hebner re-starts the match and sends Sherri to the locker
(probably because she was about to fall out of her top). Virgil gets the win in a
rare pinfall loss for DiBiase. Heenan mentions: "Next time you see that belt, it'll
be hanging from the mirror of a '78 caddy!" Sheesh.
Mountie is at the loading dock, telling the "local hick cops" the proper way to
cart off the Bossman after the jailhouse match. "Don't do it da' New York way,
do it DA MOUNTIE WAY!" Terrible, unfunny interview the rest of the way. Mooney
has a few words from the Big Bossman, as we get ready for...
SummerSlam Match 5: Jailhouse Match:
Big Bossman vs. The Mountie (w/Jimmy Hart)
Mountie kicks out of the sidewalk slam, but Bossman gets the pin with
an overhead flapjack slam. Cameras follow a shackled Mountie as he's loaded into
the paddy wagon. "You can't do this!" "You're Hurting me!!" (repeat x 1236)
Dueling interviews from Mooney and Mean Gene Okerlund featuring
the Natural Disasters, Bret Hart, Big Bossman and Macho Man Randy Savage.
Macho goes into some humorous free-form nonsense while talking with a
"lucky fan" on the special 1-900-ATTACHED number. Savage hangs up on the
guy, then picks the phone back up and resumes talking. Intermission time..and I taped
the ENTIRE 5 minute countdown clock. Talk about being a completionist!
More footage of the Mountie being booked. Including the semi-famous
fingerprinting incident. An officer asks an uncooperative Mountie to "give me the finger".
Mountie says "HERE's the finger!" and flips him the bird.
We come back with promos from the Nasty Boys and the LOD. LOD talks primarily
about the Natural Disasters.
SummerSlam Match 6: WWF Tag Team Championship:
Nasty Boys (c)(w/Jimmy Hart) vs. Legion of Doom
(Brian Knobbs & Jerry Saggs vs. Hawk & Animal)
Special stip: no DQ. Nevermind that referee Joey Marella
bothers administering a 10 count on all doubleteams and
tries to get the Nasties to stop choking with the tag rope.
LOGIC in WRESTLING! Almost a formality as the LOD completes their
"Big 3" Tag Team Title Hat-Trick (AWA, NWA, WWF)
SummerSlam Match 7: Greg "the Hammer" Valentine vs. Irwin R. Schyster
For ringwork, probably the second-best match on the card (behind Hart-Perfect).
Irwin reverses Hammer's figure four into a small package for the pin.
During the match, Gorilla mentioned a rumor that Jake "The Snake" Roberts and the Undertaker
had been spotted in the building. That would become important in about a week...
Sean Mooney is with the "Triangle of Terror": Slaughter, Mustafa and Adnan.
Mean Gene interviews special referee Sid Justice. Video is shown
of Sgt. Slaughter and his pals trying to recruit Sid for the corps as "Lt. Justice".
Words from Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior follow. Warrior sez that
the Triangle can't withstand the "coup of Hulkamania and Warrior Wildness".
He even pronounced "coup" as "coop"!
SummerSlam Match 8: Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior vs. Sgt. Slaughter,
Col. Mustafa & Gen. Adnan
Special ref: Sid Justice
Thank Duke..this is the LAST heel Sarge match! Cool nod to continuity as
Mustafa gets Hogan in the camel clutch...and Piper ACKNOWLEDGES the
significance! (In the same building Hogan broke the same hold from Iron Sheik in 1984)
Warrior chases Mustafa and Adnan to the dressing room... and subsqeuently disappears
from the WWF for six months! Hogan tosses powder in Slaughter's eyes to
get the pin. Afterwards, Hogan and Justice pose to the delight of dozens.
Give Justice credit, he really sells a bewildered look, here.
A final update of the Mountie in the slammer. A cellmate comes up to him and
asks "don't you just love the way leather feels against your skin?" This was before
prison-sex jokes were commonplace, so it was funny.
Special SummerSlam Ceremony: The Macho Wedding
Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Miss Elizabeth finally tie the knot. Heenan:
"I found out that the ringbearer is really a midget!" Gorilla: "Will you
STOP!?" Liz looks really giddy and cute here... rather sad considering how
things turned out for her. Call me a pansy, but seeing this now, it's making me depressed.
Knowing that the couple would split in real-life less than two years after this.
Then knowing that Liz would marry/divorce again and eventually end up dead in Lex Luger's home.
No joke...it's just sad.
And that, friends...is the LAST SummerSlam I ever watched.
Notice that there's NO Wedding Reception footage.
After Warrior split, the WWF backtracked and filmed an incident
where Jake Roberts and the Undertaker gave the happy couple a giftbox with a
live snake in it. Lame way to get things rolling, but this started an intense
Jake-Macho feud.
Random Match 1: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. Col. Mustafa
PTW with Lord Alfred Hayes and Sean Mooney. Mustafa is without Adnan... and
a savvy announcer would have made some airport security jokes. Mustafa attacks before the bell,
smacking Steam, errr.. DRAGON in the back and choking him on the top rope. Whip to
the ropes and Dragon leapfrogs, punches, slams, clotheslines, then dropkicks
Mustafa out of the ring. Mustafa half-heartedly "argues" with the crowd while Dragon
starts a mild "U-S-A" chant. Mustafa returns to toss Dragon into the turnbuckle,
kick with the evil pointy boot and choke some more. Another whip and this time
Dragon counters by sliding under Mustafa's legs, then leaps over for a sunset flip
and 2 count. Slam as Dragon comes off the ropes for a splash. Mustafa blocks with
his knees, punches and hits a gut-wrench suplex for 2. Mustafa attempts an
overhead suplex, but Dragon counters, reverses, then goes up top for the
high cross-body to score the pin. Mustafa walked around like he was half-asleep here.
Random Match 2: "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich vs. Irwin R. Schyster
More PTW but with Gorilla Monsoon and Alfred Hayes. Gorilla gives
Hayes some good-natured ribbing over his pronunciation of "leave-er-age"
and "tor-nah-doe". IRS starts off with a quick slam and a STIFF
stomp to Kerry's jaw. IRS with a hiptoss, but Kerry counters with his own slam.
Must be time for the heel to bail. IRS is back with a kneelift and even connects off the top
turnbuckle with a fist. He tries again, but Kerry meets him with the claw and a discus punch.
IRS rolls out, but Kerry suplexes him back in and gets a 2. Kerry misses a charge and eats
post. IRS with a nice flying clothesline and then a standing reverse chinlock and then a sleeper.
Kerry powers out and spins around to nail IRS. IRS grabs the ref and pulls him in front.
IRS parades around thinking Kerry's been DQ'd. The ref comes to, realizes
that IRS grabbed him, and awards the match to Kerry. Terrible ending.
Random Match 3: KoKo B. Ware vs. Skinner
More PTW and I think the only reason I taped this was to get some "new blood" on the tape.
KoKo punches and headbutts and yup, it's time for the heel to bail.
Skinner stomps and pounds away. He throws KoKo to the corner, then walks over
to swipe at Frankie! KoKo sneaks up with an atomic drop, but misses a charge into the
tunrbuckle. Koko reverses Skinner's irish-whip and AGAIN misses a charge into
the turnbuckle. Skinner applies his reverse neckbreaker finisher ("The Gator Breaker") for the pin.

The Third Bushwhacker? |
Random Match 4: Big Bossman vs. Col. Mustafa (w/Gen. Adnan)
More PTW, with Gorilla and Al. Major stall job to start and Gorila get so bored that
he starts talking about his home town of Rochester, where this match was taped.
Gorilla gets in a line about the Genessee Brewery while Mustafa and Bossman
FINALLY lock-up. Alfred gets in another annoying "English" word by
constantly pronouncing Mustafa as "Must-tuh-fuh".
Mustafa loads his boot, kicks and hits his gut-wrench suplex.
He tries for an overhead suplex, but Bossman reverses it, hits a spinebuster
and gets the pin. "Blink and You'll Miss It Special", as this match lasted
almost six minutes.
Random Match 5: Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs. Hercules (w/Slick)
More PTW. Herc's starting to lose some of his definition here.
Gorilla mentions that Hammer has ended alot of career...just ask Chief
Jay Strongbow. Holy crap...a WWF Strongbow reference in September 1991! Gorilla, you sly
dog. Hammer starts with an arnmbar, elbowsmashes, an axehandle off the second rope
and an inverted aotmmic drop. Hammer goes for the figure four, but Slick hops up
on the apron to distract him. Herc attacks from behind and both guys go BEYOND THE RING
for a double countout. Two words: "Lay" and "aim".
Random Match 6: WWF Intercontinental Championship:
Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Hercules (w/Slick)
I guess everything's PTW from here on out, unless otherwise noted.
By virtue of his double countout against a former IC champ from 1985,
Herc is given a title shot! Hitman with the armbar and off the ropes for
a crossbody. Herc reverses an irishwhip and Bret THUNKS into the turnbuckle.
Herc follows up with a short-arm clothesline and elbowdrop for a 2 count.
Bret comes off the ropes and Herc blows what looks like a stun-gun attempt.
Bret sells it and rolls out to ringside. Slick is over to choke on Bret until Herc
brings him back in.
Bret reverses a backdrop into a suplex and follows up with an inverted atomic drop,
charging clothesline, backbreaker and second rope elbow for 2.
Herc goes up top, but Bret kicks the ropes as Lil' Herc
meets the top rope. Both guys are out again and this time Herc
grabs a NON-FOLDING chairs and tries to brain Bret with it.
Double noggin-knocker on Slick and Herc. Bret pulls Herc back in to
immediately apply the sharpshooter and get the submission victory.

Regional Finalist of the 1991 World Moustache Championships |
Random Match 7: "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith vs. Big Bully Busick (w/Harvey Whippleman)
To paraphrase Nigel Tufnel "No one knows... wot ever happened to Big Bully Busick..
but his legacy lives on... in the crappy matches contained herein".
Boring "power" stuff to start. Both guys trade armbars and chinlocks... alot.
Bulldog gets a suplex for 2...and then it's more chinlockin! Busick blocks
another suplex and both guys trade small packages for 2 (sounds like a
ladies' luncheon). Busick kicks and slams Bulldog and it's more chinlock.
Bulldog powers out and comes off the ropes for 2 shoulderblocks. He goes for
a third, but Whippleman is up to pull the top rope
and draw the DQ. WHY, oh WHY was this aired on public TV?!
Random Match 8: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Col. Mustafa (w/Gen. Adnan)
The GRUDGE MATCH from their 1987 police bust! Another MAJOR stall job to start.
Just punching and kicking and the occassional trip to the outside.
Once again, Mustafa loads the boot, kicks and goes for... oh, for the love of Benji..
his overhead suplex is blocked AGAIN! Adnan wants to bring the 2 x 4 into the
ring, so the ref is over to protest. Hacksaw gets the lumber behind the ref's back, smacks
Mustafa with it and covers for the 3. Oh golly....not even a Conquistadors/Bolsheviks
match could save this tape now. So go ahead and send in...
Random Match 9: Barbarian vs. Hercules (w/Slick)
Whoa - heel vs.heel! Both guys trade shoulderblocks and go into a
Mediocre Posedown. For some reason, the crowd gets behind Barbarian, instantly!
Herc blocks a hiptoss attempt, hits a short-arm clothesline and stomps away.
Barbie gets his own clothesline, headbutts Herc to the mat and parts the ropes to
invite Slick in. Crowd digs that. The guys trade pucnhes and kicks for several minutes
until Barbie Fearfully Kicks Herc and executes a slam. Herc tumbles out and Barbie tries to ..
.. SUPLEX him back in. (Rocky the Flying Squirrel: "Again?
But that trick NEVER works!") Slick is over to grab the leg, allowing Herc to fall on
top and score the pin. Afterwards, Barbarian gets the crowd going as he
clears the ring, the gorilla-presses Slick over the top-rope onto Herc. Trivia geeks
might score this as a "face turn".. but Barbarian left shortly after.
Random Match 10: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. The Warlord (W/Slick)
Dragon sez it's CLAPPY TIME and gets the crowd going. Warlord shoves off his initial
assualts, until Dragon grabs the leg and takes the big man to the mat. Quick 2 count as
Dragon flips over. Warlod is whipped to the corner and Dragon follows it up with
a schoolboy takedown and then tries a crucifix. Warlord falls back to take control.
The Always Entertaining Bearhug appears. Warlord slams the Dragon, gets a backdrop
off the ropes and another slam. He then makes themistake of trying to hit Dragon's boot
with his chin, from the second turnbuckle. Dragon makes a comeback with reverse
knife-edges, 2 dropkicks and a chop off the top tunrbuckle. He goes up again
for a flying axehandle. Once more up top as Dragon sets up for the high cross-body.
Slick pushes him off to draw the DQ. Dragon dropkicks Warlord out and chases off Slick.
Last WWF match on my tapes for Steamboat... he would return to NWA/WCW about
two weeks after this, where he recovered his first AND last name as Dustin Rhodes'
mystery tag team partner.
Random Match 11: Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich & Greg
"The Hammer" Valentine vs. Beau Beverly, Blake Beverly & Tanaka (w/the Genius)
Weird teams on each side. Although the heel side could be "Team Former AWA Tag Champs".
Snuka and Beau start and the latter hooks ina side headlock. Criss-cross rope action
as Snuka chops and clears the ring. Respective tags to Kerry and Blake. Blake shoulderblocks and works Kerry into the corner. Kerry punches back, then misses a charge into the
opposite corner. Blake slams him then misses a splash from the second rope. Tag to Hammer
who ends up elbowsmashing and backdropping Tanaka. Snuka is back and bounces off the ropes
into a blind knee from Beau. Heels work on Snuka for a bit with Beau getting
an underhook suplex for 2. Beverlys doubleteam Snuka some more then tag in Tanaka.
Snuka is sent to the ropes and hits a flying headbutt on Tanaka. Kerry is tagged in,
and he stumbles, hits a discus punch and pins Tanaka. After the match, the Beverlys are
pissed at Tanaka and hit their finisher on him. Sort of a backdrop/neckbreaker thing..
almost like an early version of... the Dudley Death Drop. Innovative my ass. Maybe we can call it
the 3-B: the Beverly Bitch Bump.
Random Match 12: Sid Justice vs. Col. Mustafa (w/Gen.Adnan)
A "feature match" form Superstars of Wrestling. Mustafa attacks before
the bell, but Justice shrugs him off, kicks and powerbombs him to
get the quick pin. Adnan runs in and gets his own powerbomb.

"Bah! Where's the TV Championship?!" |
UPDATE with Mean Gene Okerlund! Wow, I must have wanted to tape a FULL match,
so I actually taped the update segment. Allright with me, since this
contains some nifty footage of the Roddy Piper - Ric Flair feud.
Clips of Piper on the Funeral Parlor, confronting Bobby Heenan and
spitting on the "REAL" World Championship Belt. Clip from a month later, where
Flair was on the way to the ring, but stopped at the broadcast table
to slap Piper. Heenan and Flair cut a promo (WITH the non-video distorted NWA belt)
to end the segment.
Random Match 13: Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. The Mountie (w/Jimmy Hart)
More Superstars stuff. Non-title match, so naturally Mountie gets on the house mic and
demands to know WHY. Bret sez that he'll never give a title shot to
a jailbird. Jimmy Hart dumps a bucket of water on Bret,t hen Mounite "zaps"
him with the "shock stick"... complete with SOUND EFFECTS.
Random Match 14: Rockers vs. Natural Disasters (w/Jimmy Hart)
(Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty vs. Earthquake & Typhoon)
From Wrestling Challenge. Rockers feel the need to show off their
neon green painters' caps (available in the WWF Catalog!). I dunno...
even when I had my mullet and Dokken tapes, I never felt the urge to
wear a neon green hat.
Rockers run around the ring and use the big guys'
weight and size against them. Marty gets a dropkick on Quake, but Quake
takes over and slams him to the mat. Heenan: "c'mon Jannetty...
let's see a small package, now!" Quake sets up his finisher, but Shawn
grabs his leg on the rope bounce. Typhoon comes in to slam Marty and
drop an elbow. He misses another elbowdrop, allowing Marty to roll away and tag Shawn.
All four guys enter the ring and Marty flies off the top to
nail Quake. Quake holds him up, so Shawn flies from another corner to knock
his partner on top for a quick 2. Shawn gets caught between both
Disasters and Marty accidentally dropkicks all three guys together.
Shawn is knocked out, while Marty decides to chase Jimmy Hart to the locker.
Earthquake drops ass on Shawn, then tags Typhoon for a big splash and the 3 count.
For this brief moment, the Disasters were My Favorite Wrestlers Ever!
Marty returns to help his injured partner as therefs bring in a stretcher.
Shawn stumbles around and violently refuses the stretcher. Start of the Rockers
split, but it actually goes back to April 91 and the big Tag Team Battle Royal
(See tape 14).
Random Match 15: Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart vs. Ric Flair
Superstars feature. Anvil starts with a headlock and off the ropes
for a shoulderblock. Flair counters with an armbar, rakes the eyes and
chops Anvil into the corner. Anvil gets a backdrop, two clotheslines,
then misses a high knee into the corner. Flair goes to work on the
"injured" leg, drags Anvil, and slams the leg into the post.
 |
|
"Duke, can I have my old job back?" |
Flair keeps stomping and kicking the knee, hooks the figure four
and gets the submission victory. After the bell, Flair hooks two
more figure fours and stomps some more. Announcers throw it to..
Sgt. Slaughter is at the Statue of Liberty, promising to defend
human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization
detemined to.. err, wrong TV show. Slaughter ends by growling:
"I want my country baccccck!"
Back to the arena, where the refs are helping Anvil down the aisle.
The Beverly Brothers are coming the other way. They shrug their shoulders
and stomp on Anvil's leg some more, until the refs shoo them away.
Random Match 16: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Big Bully Busick (w/Harvey Whippleman)
Back to PTW. Hacksaw starts his own version of CLAPPY TIME.
However a close-up shows that it's Clappy BOOGER Time.
Punching ensues. Hacksaw with a clothesline and it must be time for the heel
to bail. Busick takes over, chokes, snapmares and goes for the chinlock!
Hacksaw elbows out, hits the turnbuckle and Busick goes for ANOTHER
chinlock. Busick whips him to the corner, Hacksaw gets his foot up
and knocks Busick to the outside. Hacksaw hops out and
throws Busick into the table. Back in, where Hacksaw slams Busick,
connects with the 3 point stance clothesline and gets the pin.
Random Match 17: WWF Tag Team Championship
Legion of Doom (c) vs. Nasty Boys (w/Jimmy Hart)
(Hawk & Animal vs. Brian Knobbs & Jerry Saggs)
More PTW.bad guys work on Animal for a bit. Animal clears
with shoulderblocks and tags Hawk. Hawk gets a crescent kick on
Saggs, but is tossed into the turnbuckle.
Nasties doubleteam Hawk for most of the match. Hawk
gets a despertaion slam, but can't make the tag. Saggs slams
Hawk, while Knobbs sets up for a flying elbow. Hawk gets the boot up
and makes the tag to Animal. Animal cleans house andslams Knobbs for
a 2 count. All four guys are in and, since its the Nasties, the
helmet must be coming in soon...yep, there it is! Knobbs errantly hits
Saggs and the LOD wins by DQ.
Random Match 18: "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich vs. Underaker (w/Paul Bearer)
Over to Wrestling Challenge. All three guys have World Class roots... so this
reminds me of a typical World Class
match-up from 1983: a Von Erich vs. the Freak of the Week from Devastation, Inc.
Where's General Skandar Ackbar?! There's a special
"Hulk-a-sized" casket at ringside. Taker pounds and chokes to start. Kerry
ducks a clothesline off the ropes, pops up and hits the discus punch to send
Taker over the top rope. Taker is unfazed and gets right back up. Kerry rolls out
and grabs the body bag and throws it into the crowd.
back inside, Taker comes off the ropes with a flying clothesline
and then the Tombston Piledriver to get the pin. Quick squash for Taker, but
somebody had to do the job to hype Taker's Title shot. Seemed more significant
to have Kerry do it, rather than KoKo B. Ware or Jim Powers. Good job.
Random Match 19: "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith vs. Irwin R. Schyster
PTW from MSG. IRS slams and hiptosses to start. Bulldog is ticked and
returns themoves. Lockup and IRS goes for an arm-wringer. Bulldog rolls
to the mat and reverses. Bulldog goes into a side headlock, comes off
the ropes for a shoulderblock, tries another, but IRS leapfrogs.
Bulldog hits him a dropkick in the back. Commercial break and when we come
back the match is clipped. IRS with a STIFF shoulderblock, legdrop
and a 2 ct. IRS is sent to the corner and floats over on a charging Bulldog.
Bulldog grabs him and tries for the running slam. IRS grabs the ropes, falls on
Bulldog and gets a 2. Bulldog backdrops him and sends him skampering.
IRS is out to ringside, where he lifts up the apron and finds a
tag rope. He brings it in, stops a suplex attempt and starts choking Bulldog.
Bulldog is tossed out and he gets his OWN tag rope.
Bulldog rolls back in and returns the choking. IRS gets a low-blow, staggers over
and falls right into a small package. Bell rings for a "20 minute time limit draw".
Good match, and it's possible the un-editted version was actually 20.
Random Match 20: Bushwhackers vs. "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase & Irwin R. Schyster (w/Sensational Sherri)
More from Wrestling Challenge. Possibly the debut
of the as-of-yet-unnamed Money, Inc. Sherri looks rather boob-alicious here, so of course
the cameras avoid her. Heels doubleteam Luke
like crazy, switching in and out and smashing him into the corner. Smooth teamwork
and it's easy to see why these guys were almost immediately inserted into the top
of the weak tag division. Butch finally comes in and
pounds away. He bounces off the ropes where Sherri is supposed to "trip"
him. Butch partially sells.. so DiBiase whips him again and they
repeat the same spot. Looks like Sherri blows it again, so DiBiase
quickly covers Butch for the 3 count.
Random Match 21: "El Matador" Tito Santana vs. Hercules
MSG debut of Tito in the Matador gimmick. Tito suckers Herc into a
comedy bull-charging segment
to start..only there's one problem: comedy is supposed to be, y'know, FUNNY.
Herc gets a side headlock and bounces off the ropes. Tito dodges him twice,
then gets a drop toehold and an armbar. Inverted atomic drop and that leads
to the Always Enthralling BEARHUG. Tito fights out and slams Herc's head to the mat,
three times. Flying forearm from Tito, but Herc's leg is on the bottom rope.
Herc punches and attempts a piledriver. Tito counters it into a backdrop and
comes off the ropes with "El Paso de Muerte". Tito covers to score the pin.
Why'd you Tape This?
Wow... I remember this stuff being ALOT more exciting.
After the SummerSlam PPV, the only nifty segments are
the Bulldog-IRS match and the Update with Piper-Flair. But if you like
punches and irish whips, then by all means enjoy. The lack of
Saturday Night's Main Event really shows. Overall, the SNME matches
were usually of a slightly higher quality than the PTW, Superstars and
Challege stuff. Without an SNME, this tape kinda wanders.
A few angles developed towards the end, but no fond memories for me.
Well, maybe it's because I was finally growing
up a little bit around this time.
The next tape starts off about a week before Survivor Series, contains that PPV
and goes into late December 1991. It also contains the ORIGINAL broadcast
of the semi-rare "This Tuesday in Texas".
However, before I get to that tape (#17), I want to take a breather and cover
a special "WWF Rarities" tape. Neat stuff like
Hogan/Bigelow vs. DiBiase/Andre, Harts vs. Twin Towers,
Piper vs. Repo Man,
Hogan/Piper vs. Flair/Justice and some other
seldom seen stuff. So, expect Tape 17 sometime in late December or
early January. In the meantime, you can
still e-mail me your own
rasslin' reviews
or you if ya' wanna see these matches on YOUR TV you can
set up a trade for this tape!
