WWF Supertape Vol II and III
From Our Pal, "OrangeGoblinFan". A few repeat matches
that are covered elsewhere on this site... but that just proves what I've always suspected--
nobody reads this site :)
!---------------------begin guest column-----------------!
WWF Supertape II:
- The host of the tape is Sean Mooney at Coliseum Video studio (a bland looking stage area), playing with the latest WWF Figures, which included Demolition, Twin Towers, Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Brutus Beefcake, Ted Dibiase, Jake Roberts, Rick Rude, and Ultimate Warrior. Whenever Mooney says Supertape, an echo repeats it. Maybe it was God. Mooney runs down the tape before we get to the action.
- WWF King of the WWF Crown Match:
"Macho King" Randy Savage (c) (w/ Sensational Sherri) vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan:
I'm more than positive this is from the January 1990 Saturday Night's Main Event telecast, and from my first impression, it pretty much sucked. Savage had won the crown from Duggan around September of 1989 and this is the "Big" Re-match, and is also the time frame when Savage began wearing the long tights instead of the speedo look. Savage takes FOREVER in his pre-match undressing, milking it as long as humanly possible. Duggan's acting in the ring is in short, horrible. Duggan has enough and dumps over Savage's little king podium, spilling on the arena floor. Duggan slugs away at Savage and tosses him in the ring. Savage is sent to the buckle and whipped across the ring. Duggan misses a charge but is still on strong, but a Savage clothesline puts him down. Savage chokes away at Duggan and heads outside with an elbow across the jaw. Back in the ring and Duggan catches Savage with a roundhouse right. Duggan pummels Savage in the corner with forearms and he yells as Sherri. Headbutt by Duggan and he whps Savage across the ring, and connecting with a clothesline for two. Delayed atomic drop by Hacksaw and Sherri jumps on the apron allowing Savage a double axe-handle from behind, sendind Duggan outside. Double Axe-handle off the top rope to the floor on Duggan. Running high knee by Savage sends Duggan into the post, and Lord Alfred actually uses the word "Shelacking". Savage stomps away at the head of Duggan and throws him back in the ring. Savage to the top rope, and nails another axe-handle for two. Savage hangs Duggan across the top rope and quickly covers for two. Savage with a choke in the middle of the ring and he covers again for two. Savage misses a second rope sit down splash, and gets caught up. Duggan misses an elbow drop, but still finds time to attack. Savage rakes the eyes, but walks into a back drop, landing on the arena floor. Sherri distracts Duggan again, so Duggan heads outside. Duggan with a clothesline to Savage and Sherri argues with referee Danny Davis. Duggan sends Savage back in the ring finally and slams the King. Duggan with a jumping knee drop for a delayed two count as the referee is distracted by Sherri again. Duggan with a big right for two as Savage gets a foot on the bottom rope. Duggan catches Savage with a series of clotheslines a la Warrior and sends Savage out again with a big right fist. Back inside Savage goes, but Sherri atatcks Duggan, leading to a chase back in the ring and we get a VEY unpleasent shot of Sherri's underwear. Savage from behind with a knee and he goes to the top rope with another double-axehandle, but Duggan with a blow to the midsection as well. Savage gets Sherri's purse, and we know whats next. KA-POW with the purse, but Savage only gets a two count! Duggan with an inside cradle for two, and he sends Savage into the buckle. Atomic drop by Duggan and he connects with a clothesline. More clotheslines by Duggan and he calls for the end. Three-Point Stance Clothesline connects, but Savage is sent outside. Duggan suplexes Savage back in but Sherri pulls the leg from under him, allowing Savage to land on top of Duggan for three at 9:16. to retain his crown. *3/4 Still nothing special, but Savage carried it the best he could. After the match Duggan attacks Savage again and nails him with his 2x4, sending him running to the locker rooms. Duggan celebrates like he won, but of course, Duggan didn't win a match in the entire year without DQ/Count-Out results. Not being serious there.
- The Rockers vs. The Powers of Pain (w/ Mr. Fuji):
This is the first match from the Rockers "Superstar Profile" on this Coliseum Video. For everyone's luck, it's from good old Madison Square Garden, and I love it, I just hope the match is good. Gorilla Monsoon & Hillbilly Jim are on commentary. Barbarian starts the match with Michaels. They lockup, stupidly, and Barbarian shoves Michaels across the ring. Another lockup and Barbarian throws Michaels into the corner, but misses a big roundhouse right. Conference time and they lockup again. Michaels with a side headlock, and Barbarian whips him off and connects with a shoulder block. Criss cross sequence and Barbarian catches a cross body attempt. Jannetty pushes them over and Michaels lands on top for two. Jannetty with an armbar, and Michaels tags in to work the arm as well. Jannetty back in again and they work the double arm bar. Double Crescent Kicks connect to both men followed by double clotheslines and the crowd goes crazy. Warlord tags in against Michaels now and Warlord with a nasty boot to the midsection. Clubbing forearm across the back of Michaels followed by a double axe-handle smash. Irish whip and Michaels with a hurricanrana with a little help from Jannetty. Jannetty in with an armbar, but Warlord fights. Irish whip and Michaels dropkicks Warlord over Jannetty for two. Jannetty tries a hurricanrana but Warlord puts him down and out with a powerbomb. Warlord continues to the pound the back of Jannetty and back drops him WAY into the air for two. I noticed now that Jannetty has his ribs taped, so he is selling an injury or is really injured. Another back drop sends Jannetty into the lights just about for another two counr. Barbarian chokes Jannetty across the second rope behind the referees back and he tags in with a headbutt to the kidneys. Super Irish whip to the corner and Barbarian with a vicious big boot to the face, sending Jannetty to the outside in front of Fuji, who canes Jannetty behind the referee's back. Barbarian slams Jannetty's back into the ring post while Hebner argues with Michaels. Warlord sends Jannetty back in the ring and Barbarian with a massive clothesline with the famous Jannetty over-sell for two. Warlord tags back in and pounds the back some more. Jannetty tries fighting back but Warlord keeps putting him down. A double team ends Jannetty's superman comeback and Barbarian comes in with a bear-hug. Jannetty fights free and comes off the second rope with an axe-handle. He tries a second attempt but Barbarian catches him with a powerslam. Barbarian to the second rope and he misses the elbow drop that always misses. Michaels gets the HOT tag and hammers away at Barbarian. Mounted punches in the corner and he double axe-handles Warlord. Irish whip and Jannetty with a sunset flip for two. Irish whip is reversed and Jannetty helps Michaels with a cross body for two. All four men in now and The Rockers with mounted corner shots. Michaels is whipped into Barbarian and Fuji canes Michaels from behind, allowing Barbarian to cover for three at 9:58. **1/2 Decent match, probably the best I have with the Powers of Pain in 2-on-2 action. Michaels dropkicks Fuji out of the ring, but Warlord sends him out of the ring and the Powers of Pain lay a grade A shit-kicking on Jannetty until Michaels chases them off with a steel chair in hand. This lead to a re-match at MSG the next month in a Six-Man Tag featuring the Rockers & Jim Duggan against The Powers of Pain & Mr. Fuji I believe.
- The Rockers vs. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine & Dino Bravo (w/ Jimmy Hart):
Part Two of the Rockers profile, and hopefully they win this match. Not from anything inparticular from television, but it's from a Superstars Taping, and most likely a Dark Match. Mooney & Hayes back on Commentary, so mute may work into the match. Jannetty and Bravo start the match with a lockup. Bravo shoves Jannetty down and celebrates already. Lockup and Bravo with a standing side headlock and mega shoulder block. Lockup and Jannetty with a headlock now. Michaels with a blind tag and he dropkicks Bravo into a Jannetty slam. Michaels slams Valentine and they nail dropkicks to both of their opponents, sending them running. Michaels and Bravo lockup and Bravo works the arm. Valentine tags in with a few chops and clubbing blows to the back. Hammerlock whip into the buckle by Valentine and he continues hammering on the arm of Michaels. I'm amazed Mooney knew was a Chicken-Wing Armlock was. Valentine accidentally posts his shoulder allowing Michaels to give him a dose of his own medicine. Snapmare by Michaels and Jannetty comes in with a big knee drop across the arm. Jannetty with a hammer lock followed by a snap mare. Michaels tags in with a second rope knee drop across the arm and works the arm for a little more. Double Arm bar spot works and Jannetty covers for two. Armbar by Jannetty but Valentine fights free. Bravo comes in and rams Jannetty's head into the buckle and nails a series of headbutts. Irish whip is reversed and Jannetty with a monkey flip followed by a clothesline. A Second monkey flip is blocked with an inverted atomic drop and Valentine tags in with a double stomp to the chest. Valentine with a vertical suplex into a cover for two. Abdominal Stretch by Valentine and Bravo with some illegal blows to the exposed midsection. Bravo baits Michaels into the ring allowing a double back elbow by the bad guys for two. Gut-wrench suplex by Bravo gets another two count. Valentine comes in with a chop across the neck and a headbutt to the midsection. Valentine turns around the Hart Breaker, but Jannetty kips up, only to run into a clothesline followed by an elbow drop for two. Jannetty eats Bravos boot (not literally) and Bravo with a front face headlock. Michaels gets the fake hot tag, and Valentine nails a double axe-handle behind the referees back for two. Reverse Chin-Lock by Valentine, and I botice Hart is WITHOUT his Mega-Phone! Jannetty tries fighting back but Hammer pounds on him a bit. Bravo with a scoop slam but he misses a jumping elbow drop. Jannetty makes the HOT tag and Michaels is all over Bravo. Back body drop to Bravo and he nails a cross body press for two. Michaels with a series of rights followed by a snap suplex followed by a dropkick to Valentine and another to Hart! Double dropkick to Bravo! The Rockers head to the top ropes and comes down with double fist drops for two thanks to Valentine. Irish whip and Michaels and Bravo knock heads. Valentine rolls Bravo onto Michaels for two to a big pop. Jannetty gets the Death Tag and rolls up Bravo. Valentine with a clothesline reverses it and the referee counts three at 11:37!! Instead though, Ronnie Garvin, Evil Good Guy Referee at large, instructs the referee that Valentine cheated, and The Rockers get the CHEAP duke via reverse Decision. **1/2 Another decent match, maybe the best Bravo match I've ever seen, but The Rockers jobbing in both of their Spotlight matches pretty much blows, even though they were "Awarded" the win in this one.
- Fan Favorites Match:
Hercules vs. Akeem (w/ Slick):
Possibly from Wrestling Challenge, but it may just be another Dark Match from the television taping. And we all know NO REAL FAN WOULD PICK THIS MATCH! Tony Schiavone & Alfred Hayes are on commentary, so it IS from Challenge. (Anything not televised is dubbed with Mooney & Hayes, while everything is left intact) Akeem hides outside the ring to start as Hercules swings around his chain. Akeem dances around really badly and they lockup. Akeem rakes the eyes and hammers away at Hercules with rights. Irish whip is reversed to the corner and Hercules with a big clothesline followed by some mounted punches. Roundhouse Right sends Akeem into the ropes to the outside. Slick teased getting in the ring to fight Hercules, which is hilarious, but Akeem holds him back from an ass kicking. Major stalling outside the ring and the match is already half over. Akeem jives around the ring and they "box". Hercules catches Akeem with a series of jabs and a wind-up roundhouse right. Irish whip and Akeem everses, only to eat more knuckle sandwiches. Akeem blocks a slam attempt and hammers away on Hercules. Akeem chokes Hercules across the second rope, and Slick gets in a cheap shot as well. Akeem whips Hercules across the ring but misses an avalanche. Hercules with more punching and Akeem eats turnbuckle ten times, and a few more times thanks to the leverage. Irish whip and Akeem is knocked down with a series of clotheslines. Hercules bounces off the ropes, but Slick pulls the rope down, causing a Disqualification win to Hercules at 5:00. DUD Nothing match. Akeem misses a splash in the ring and Hercules with a delayed slam on Akeem and he celebrates with his chain in hand. Short enough to defintiely say this was on television.
- Call Of The Action:
Jim Powers & Jim McPherson vs. The Orient Express (w/ Mr. Fuji):
Sato starts the match with Jim Powers and hammers away at him with forearms and a series martial arts blows. Irish whip by Sato is reversed and Powers leap frogs Sato leading to a Powers back body drop. McPherson gets caught with a few blows by Sato and he applies a headlock. Double headbutt by the Express and Tanaka with a nasty knife edge chop. Tanaka scoops up McPherson and nails a reverse crescent kick. Sato tags back in and nails a karate kick to the mouth. McPherson really sucks at selling. Sato hammers away at whatever his name is and nails a reverse crescent kick across the face. Sato connects with the Liger Bomb (sit-down powerbomb) for the easy three count at about the 1:36 mark. 1/4* Highlighted mainly by the Express being actually decent in such a short time. The Winners celebrate after the match while Powers checks on the guy no one knows and who never got a job with the WWF.
- Tag Team Match Of The Month:
Demolition vs. The Orient Express (w/ Mr. Fuji):
Our Second match from Madison Square Garden, and Demolition happen to be one of my favorite Tag Teams of all time. From a few weeks before Wrestlemania VI I might add. Demolition as babyfaces STILL acted as heels, and no one picked up on it. Moonson, Hayes & Hillbilly Jim are back in the commentary booth. Smash starts the match with Tanaka. They lockup and Smash shoves Tanaka into the corner. Smash slams Tanaka down and rams his head into the turnbuckle. Irish whip and Smash connects with a clothesline with the over-sell. Double clothesline by Demolition and Ax with a cheap shot from the apron. Smash places Tanaka across the top rope and they double pound the Fried Shrimp out of Tanaka. Ax with a snapmare and he applies a reverse chinlock. Sato tags in and Ax wins the lockup with a headlock takeover. Hip toss by Ax and he catches Sato with a back elbow in the corner. The Express recuperate outside the ring with Fuji so the heels are going to take over soon. Fuje the Stooge chants. Sato and Ax lockup and Ax with a headlock. Sato whips Ax into the knee of Tanaka and they double team. Tanaka with some low kicks and a series of rights in the corner. Ax comes back with clubbing rights and rams Tanaka's face into Smash's boot. Smash with a delayed back breaker for two. Armbar by Smash and he hammers away at the arm of Tanaka. Ax tags in to continue the beating and puts Tanaka on the canvas. Smash tags back in and they double back drop Tanaka into the heavens. Tanaka rakes the eyes of Smash and now the Express double team him. Sato chops away at Smash and thats about all. Tanaka back in and he hammers away on Smash. Sato tags back in with a forearm, but Smash hammers away on both men. Hip toss by Smash and he smashes Sato into a puddle of wonton. Irish whip and Smash with a fist to the midsection. Tanaka catches Smash with a top rope cross body and he tosses Smash to the outside, where Fuji gets in the manditory Cane shot across the back. Double stomps to Smash in the corner and Sato with MORE chops. Smash catches Sato in a mounted position, but Tanaka takes him down. Ax comes in to stomp on Tanaka, but Sato continues the punishment on Smash. Tanaka with more nothing on Smash and they must have done 607 chops by now for two. Sato with a boot to the midsection and Tanaka tags back in with a double stomp. Smash comes out of the corner with a clothesline and Ax tags in to hammer away on Tanaka. Irish whip and Ax with a back drop followed by a forearm to Sato. Tanaka eats turnbuckle and Ax whips him across the ring and nails a powerslam for two. Smash comes in and sends Sato out of the ring. Ax to the top rope, but Fuji with a cane shot brings him outside. Ax gets the cane, but Sato throws salt in his eyes, and yes, it's the Wrestlemania VI Finish for Rockers/Express, as Ax is counted out at 10:58, giving the Express the win. 1/2* VERY Boring match, definitely worse than what I originally thought.
- Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Rick "The Model" Martel:
From Madison Square Garden too! Monsoon, Hayes, Hillbilly still on commentary. Bret surprisingly in singles action. This was from Bret's SECOND aborted singles push before it clicked in 1991. Bret gives the glasses to a kid with Super Mario shirt and Warrior wrist bands on. Martel with a cheap shot and he rams Bret's head into the buckle. Martel with a series of rights and he whips Bret across the ring. Martel avoids a charge, but Bret catches him with a clothesline followed by a small package for two! Martel rolls to the outside for a breather and Bret taunts him from the second rope. Monsoon with his mumbo-jumbo body talk. Lockup and Martel with an armbar. Hart reverses, and Martel reverses back. Bret KIPS UP from the canvas and works the arm of Martel convincingly. Hammerlock by Bret and Martel following the steps of fellow canadian Mike Sharpe screams out "My Arm!" Martel Irish whips Bret off of him, but is caught with a back slide for two! Bret with an arm drag take over into an armbar. Irish whip again and Martel side steps Bret, sending him to the outside through the ropes. Martel rams Bret's back into the ring apron and comes off the apron with a double axe-handle smash. Bret has his back rammed into the apron again, and eventually gets back in the ring. Martel suplexes Bret from the apron into the middle of the ring for two. Martel stomps away at Hitman and Hillbilly Jim actually MAKES SENSE when he talks. Martel whips Bret across the ring and the ring actually SHAKES on impact. Martel hammers the back of Bret, and we find out the match was CLIPPED! Martel with an abdominal stretch to kill some time. A LOT OF TIME. Martel stomps at the back of Bret and mounts him in the corner. Bret with an inverted atomic drop and both men are down. Bret is back up and Martel begs him off, so Bret just hammers him and nails a snap suplex followed by an elbow drop for two. Bret with a scoop slam and he comes off the second rope with another elbow drop for two. Side Russian Leg Sweep by Bret gets another two count. Martel runs to the outside where Bret follows him and tosses him back in the ring. Bret with a back breaker for two again. Martel again rolls to the outside, only to have Bret toss him back in again. Bret with a roundhouse right and a dropkick connects. Bret with a stomp to the midsection for two. Bret again chases Martel around the ring, but an eye rake prevents that. Bret blocks a ramming into the apron and he hammers on Martel outside the ring and nails an atomic drop as the bell sounds at 11:48 for a TIME LIMIT DRAW! So it was either a three minute clip or a mega clip-job. **1/2 for a pretty decent match, but with more time it could have been better. After the match Martel attacks Bret from behind and hammers him in the corner. Bret whips Martel to the corner and back drops him, followed by a clothesline to send him out of the ring.
- Manager Profile with the Doctor of Style Slick. Slick does a rambling promo for a few moments before we get clips of him, and his proteges Akeem and The Warlord beating the crap out of their opponents, with Jive Soul Bro playing in the background with some random Slick and Akeem dancing mixed in there somewhere.
- Steel Cage Match:
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper vs. "Ravishing" Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan):
Yes, it's also from Madison Square Garden, and it's a pretty good match from the Fall of 1989. Piper was intrsumental in Rude losing the Intercontinental Title at Summerslam, so this might be the House Show circuit blow-off, since they never fought 1-on-1 on a PPV. Rude hammers away on Piper before the match and chops him in the throat. Piper blocks eating steel so Rude with an eye rake. Irish whip is reversed and Piper throws Rude into the cage. Rude tries escaping, so Piper whips him with his belt while he hangs off the cage. Piper continues laying in the shots and dances around like Rude to a big pop. Piper takes a swing at Heenan outside and continues pummleing Rude with the belt. Piper bites away at the forehead of Rude and Rude is ALREADY busted open. Rude tries escaping again but Piper simply yanks him down by the tights, taking them down a bit while he's at it. Rude is sent face-first into the cage again and now Piper goes for an escape. Rude yanks him down, saddling Piper across the top rope. Rude with a knee to the groin of Piper and he goes to escape out the door, but Piper holds onto the leg for dear life. Rude stomps away at Piper and drops an elbow for two. Rude is almost out but Piper gets fist full of tights and pulls Rude back into the ring. Sadly, Rude NEVER thinks about pulling his tights back up after it, and thats a good ten minutes. Piper hammers away on Rude with rights but Rude catches him with the Rude Awakening out of nowhere!!! Rude tries exiting the door again, but Pipers back up and tries escaping as well. Rude with a series of rights and we get a double headbutt collision. Both men climb the same side of the cage and both get down to the floor at the same time, in an obviously carefully done spot. Match must continue as Rude rams Pipers into the cage. Rude nails Piper with a padded chair and they re-enter the cage. Snapmare by Rude followed by a knee drop. Rude climbs to the top of the cage and comes down with a fist drop, sold like death by Piper, but a cover only gets two! Rude connects witha beautiful jumping piledriver and he goes for the door again. Rude decides to climb up the cage again but this time get crotched across the top! Piper comes up and hammers away on Rude, who gets hugn upside down! Piper tries leaving, but Heenan slams the door on his head! Rude drops back into the ring and covers for two. Piper "Scots-Up" but falls victim to a back suplex. Heenan tosses Rude a fake "foreign object" but Piper catches him with a big right and Piper has the knuckles and blasts Rude in the face with them! Piper goes for the door again, and this time he escapes at 12:56!! ***1/4 Really good for a Coliseum Video match. Goof up time as they play Rudes theme momentarily before they cut to Pipers.
- Bloopers Segment: Sean Mooney does fake "Bloopers" that are noticable a mile away. Heenan & Monsoon are classic when together. Their trip to Bush Gardens results in Heenan getting scared of Giraffe's. They visit the Hippos, that Heenan calls Rhinos, and calls them dangerous. Clips from a Beefcake vs. Genius match as Genius is OBVIOUSLY wearing a wig, and it falls off several times throughout the match. After it Beefcake clips it down and stuffs the trimmings in Genius' tights...um...OK. Footage of Heenan taking over a yaht, but nothing goes right as he gets sea sick. Funny spot as him and Monsoon fall all over the place while the boat rocks. Primetime wrestling Halloween as Monsoon is dressed like Brother Love. Love gets pissed off with Heenan in the room...but it's not Heenan, it's PIPER! Love coincidentally makes fun of Piper while he's in the room. Piper unveals himself to Love and accidentally knocks him out with a pumpkin to the mouth. Heenan weasels his way into a movie and get's blown up. In a bar scene, Heenan goes against directers orders in a fight, so he gets knocked out the window with a chair. God I wish I had more Heenan/Monsoon stuff.
- Hulk Hogan & Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake vs. Mr. Perfect & The Genius:
The Final Match of the tape, and it's also from Madison Square Garden, from a week or so before Royal Rumble 1990. Hogan & Beefcake come out wearing yellow and Hulk Rules T-shirts, to show who the bitch is. Heels attack to start, but the Mega Maniacs do a simultanious throwing over the top rope of Hennig & Genius. Heenan joins commentary team finally, guranteing some entertainment. Real American is STILL the best theme music of the 80's and early 90's. Perfect starts the match with Hogan and they lockup. Hogan shoves Perect to the corner, over-sell included. Lockup again and Perfect with a series of blows in the corner. Perfect whips Hogan to the corner and sends him out of the ring with rights. Hogan no-sells but Perfect continues hammering him. Perfect with a series of knife-edge chops. Irish whip is reversed and Hogan big boots Perfect over the top rope. Beefcake tags in and double noggin-knockers the heels and throws them both in the ring. Genius takes a beating and is whipped into a Hogan big boot. Beefcake hammers on Perfect and throws him into a Hogan forearm. Beefcake with a funny neck jerk and a roundhouse right is super over-sold for two. Hogan tags in and boots him in the midsection. Irish whip and Hogan with the axe bomber! Clothesline to Genius and Beefcake tags back in for a double back elbow. Beefcake rakes the eyes of Perfect and nails a thrust to the throat. Irish whip and Beefcake with the running high knee for two. Hogan tags back in and comes off the second rope with a double axe-handle. Scoop slam by Hogan and he drops a series of elbows and chops The Genius off the apron. Perfect is rammed into the buckle with more over-selling and Hogan lays him out with rights. Whip to the corner but Perfect dives out of the ring to avoid an elbow. Perfect gets the scroll of the Genius and he CLOBBERS Hogan with it, including a nice "smack" sound. Perfect hammers away on Hogan and rams him into the security rail. Back in the ring and Perfect with a series of rights. Genius tags in and dances around, raking the back. Rake of the eyes and Perfect chokes Hogan with the tag rope. Genius with a choke and Perfect tags back in with a series of blows. Irish whip and Perfect with a straight clothesline. Genius comes in and a moonsault meets the knees of Hogan! Hogan kicks Genius away and both teams tag. Beefcake pounds away on Hennig and nails a fist to the midsection followed by a big knee lift complete with the over-sell. Beefcake calls for the end and we get the Sleeper Hold! Hogan prevents Genius from breaking the hold for a moment, but a shot with the scroll to the back of the head puts Beefcake down for two! Heenan makes fun of Hillbilly Jim on PBP while nothing happens. Perfect stomps away at Beefcake while Heenan argues why all the baby-faces are allowed to have props at ring side, but The Genius doesn't. Genius chokes Beefcake across the top rope as it's Grammer Lessons with Bobby Heenan. Perfect with a clothesline as Heenan wonders if his Grandfather loved Hillbilly Jim, why did he only give him ONE Horse shoe instead of all four. Perfect with a reverse chinlock and he clubs away at Beefcake. Perfect cheap shots Hogan to allow for some double teaming and a choke from the Genius. Perfect with his incrddibly over-the-top knee lift to Beefcake and he beats on him with rights and lefts. Perfect with a neck twist between the legs. Irish whip and Beefcake with a nice boot to the face, and Hennig over-sells again. Hogan gets the HOT tag...but the referee didn't see it! Perfect drags Beefcake back to his corner and Genius comes in with chokes. Genius boots Beefcake a few times but falls victim to a series of rights. Rake to the eyes stops Beefcake and Genius with mounted eye rakes. Perfect comes back in to talk trash and rakes the eyes of the Barber. Irish whip and Perfect with a clothesline to the face. Perfect with the Perfect-Plex, but Hogan breaks the count at two! Genius tags in and so does Hogan. Hogan Hulks-Up without taking punishment and unlaods on everyone. Scoop slam to the Genius followed by a double noggin knocker. Hogan with ights to Genius followed by the big boot. Leg drop connects and Hogan covers for three at 15:29! ** Decent contest, highlighted by Perfect and his crazy over-selling. Plus I mark for three of the four guys so I'm a little bias. Genius takes the sleeper after the match and he gets his 400th haircut of 1990 as Hogan throws the referee out of the ring. Genius obviously has hair extensions on, as he got WAY too many haircuts in a span of four months.
Final Thoughts: For a Coliseum Video, everything on here is pretty good overall, with the usual crap mixed in as well. The Rockers spotlight was nothing but them jobbing, but FIVE total matches from Madison Square Garden makes me happy. Mild Recommendation for Supertape II, and probably the best of the Supertape series.
WWF Supertape Vol. III:
- Sean Mooney is the host of Supertape III, and he and Alfred Hayes are sitting in front of the worst blue screen graphic ever witnessed by mankind. First though, a commercial for WWF Figures. Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Jake Roberts, Demolition, Randy Savage, Big Boss Man, Akeem, Andre The Giant, Rick Rude, Brutus Beefcake, Ted Dibiase and the Ring. Mooney talks airplane mumbo jumbo before introducing us into the first match.
- WWF Intercontinental Championship Match:
"Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich (c) vs. Mr. Perfect:
From a WWF House Show from Toronto, Onatrio, Canada, another lucky place like in the United States that aired shows on an oridinary basis back in the day. Mr. Perfect, for the second time, opens the Supertape and for the first of two times, will close it out. They lockup and Tornado shoves Perect hard into the corner. Lockup again and it leads to nothing. Lockup and Perfect goes for a cheap shot, but its blocked. Lockup and Perfect with a chop in the corner. Whip to the corner and Perfect comes out with a sleeper hold. Tornado breaks free the hard way but Perfect knees him in the back and reapplies the hold. Tornado FINALLY escapes, but runs into another sleeper hold! Tornado uses Perfects momentum to ram his head into the buckle. Perfect hammers away on Tornado in the corner and nails a NASTY chop. Snapmare and float over neck snap by Perfect. Small Package by Perfect gets two. Perfect hammers away on Tornado and drops an elbow for two again. Perfect continues to not allow Von Erich ANY offense and whips him to the ropes, only to miss the awesome running dropkick. Tornado comes back with roundhouse rights, but an eye poke stops him. Perfect off the second rope jumps into the Claw! Tornado with the Tornado punch, and the momentum sends Perfect out of the ring with his twisting sell. As a side note, I've done that before, and really, it's both funny and in some ways tough to not land on your head doing it. Perfect was obviously appreciated for his dedication and complete over-selling of anything. Tornado follows Perfect out of the ring and nails some blows. Perfect blocks a bulldog and whips Tornado into the post. Perfect gets back in the ring and wins the match via Count-Out at 7:37. * Probably one of the worst Mr. Perfect matches I've ever seen before his near-career ending back injury. Perfect poses with the Intercontinental Title afterr the match, so Tornado beats him up again. Perfect avoids Tornados finisher again and Von Erich reclaims his championship.
- "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka vs. The Barbarian:
Dear God, Almighty, this match is going to suck. Last time I completely skipped it, but I guess I'll sit through the pain for it this time. This match is from the Maple Leaf Gardens as well, but from a different show. We get some stalling to start before they lockup. Barbarian shoves Snuka to the corner, so Snuka barks, or something, in his face. Barbarian shoves Snuka down, and more Snuka noises. I hear several boring chants in the background. Barbarian with a headlock, as the first move 2:40 into the match, followed by a shoulder block. Criss Cross and Snuka with a stiff chop. Snuka from the second rope with a double chop to the neck of Barbarian and he nails the diving headbutt. Snuka with a headlock now and a shoulder block does nothing. Snuka with a cross body press for two folowed by a dropkick to the face, sending the Barbarian to the outside. Back in the ring with get hell-a stalling until Barbarian opts to just beat the crap out of banana-boy. Snuka comes back with his crap and applies an armbar to make this match even better. Barbarian catches Snuka with a clothesline and poses. More crap happens and I'm forced to skip this match, it's THAT DAMN BAD! Barbarian applies a 3:00 bear-hug. Snuka fights free and headbutts the back of the head of Barbarian. Snuka hammers Barbarian in the corner with chops and the crowd doesn't give a fuck. Snuka off the second rope with headbutt for two. Whip to the corner is reversed, and Snuka with a cross body, but Barbarian rolls through for two! Barbatian with a big boot and he rolls Snuka up for three at 15:14, with some help with the ropes. -**** I swear to God, the match is that terrible.
- Tugboat vs. Earthquake (w/ Jimmy Hart):
This is certainly not a good step in the right direction. This is taped from a Wrestling Challenge taping, and is the feud that wouldn't end in 1990-91 until Tugboat turned heel. Tugboat is announced from Norfolk, VA, a navy-base city. Tugboat attacks Earthquake to start with clubbing blows and ARM DRAGS EARTHQUAKE! Back in the ring Earthquake goes and Tugboat hammers away on him. Side headlock by Tugboat and a shoulder block goes nowhere. Earthquake poses like he did anything. Lockup and Earthquake with a headlock now. Irish whip by Tugboat and a shoulder block does nothing again, and Tugboat pulls the horn. Earthquake off the ropes and he actually nails a dropkick! Earthquake stomps away at the fallen Typhoon and walks over him. Quake shoves Tugboat to the corner and continues to stomp him. Earthquake with a choke now and we get TUGBOAT chants. Earthquake connects with a massive elbow drop and covers after a second for two. Irish whip and Tugboat with a clothesline puts down Quake. Big Splash connects and Tugboat attacks Hart! Tugboat with a drop-kick of his own, and Quake is trapped in the ropes. Tugboat hammers away and throws Jimmy around. Bravo runs in for the DQ at 6:22 and the evil Canadians do a beatdown and actually slam the fat guy. Tugboat rolls away from the Vertical Splash and chases the heels off with a chair. 1/2* Only because seeing two fat men doing dropkicks is shocking. Otherwise, a nothing match that they've done several times.
- Six-Man Tag Team Match:
The Ultimate Warrior & Legion Of Doom vs. Demolition:
This is one of the few times all THREE members of Demolition (Ax, Smash,Crush) teamed up at the same time for a television match. Ax was mainly the outside man thanks to a heart problem, and Crush was the new guy no one liked. This is thankfully from Madison Square Garden, so that automatically gives it half-a-star rating. This is also the first match of the Legion of Doom's Profile on the tape. Warrior was the World Champion at the time, and controversy wasn't far, as he hadn't defended the title for several months which is against the 30-Day rule. All Six-Men are face painted brawlers, so this should be interesting. The Warriors clothesline all three members of Demolition and celebrate already. Smash catches Animal with a clothesline and hammers away on him. Smash with a choke across the second rope and follows with more rights. Irish whip is reversed and Animal with a neat powerslam for two. Animal with an elbow drop and he falls victim to an eye rake. Crush comes in and is worked over by the LOD. Hawk and Crush trade shoves and lockup to no advantage. Crush rakes the eyes of Hawk and nails a delayed back breaker. Irish whip to the corner and Crush with a forearm to the kidneys. Irish whip is reversed and Hawk with a big clothesline followed by a dropkick! Irish whip and Hawk with a diving shoulder tackle followed by a fist drop for two. Monsoon continuously calls Smash "Crush" and Crush "Smash". Ax tags in against Warrior and gets his clock cleaned in the corner. Irish whip is reversed and Warrior catches Ax with a big boot and clothesline. Slams to both Smash & Crush and he completes the trifecta with Ax. Big Splash misses badly and Warrior rolls around pretending to try selling. Ax hammers away on Warrior, making WARRIOR THE FACE IN PERIL! Ax throws Warrior outside the ring where Smash and Crush double team the Ultimate Moron. Warrior comes back for a seocnd but is quickly put back down. Demolition Ax clubs away across the chest of Warrior and chokes. Smash continues the deedbut gets hung up across the top rope. Smash with more double axe-handle blows and a choke. Crush applies a choke hold and more double teaming by Demolition. Smash in to place Warrior across the top rope and they triple tema him until LOD run in, only to be sent outside the ring. The Oiriginal Demolition hammer Warrior, but Animal prevents the Decapitation and Warrior makes the tag out. Animal with a back elbow to Ax and clothesline to Smash. Forearm puts Crush down and he whips Ax into Smash. Smash prevents the Doomsday Device, so Hawk clotheslines him down. Ax hammers on Animal, as does Smash. Crush tags in for a bear-hug Animal breaks free and applies his own, but Smash quickly breaks it up. Smash chokes away on Animal and Monsoon pulls a Heenan, saying the legal man has paint on his face. Ax continues to pummel Animal but fulls victim to a sledge to the back of the neck. Crush tags in to bait Hawk into the ring and send Animal into his teams corner. Ax chokes on Animal with the tag rope and Crush who is green here, stands around. Smash in with a back suplex for two. Smash applies a reverse chinlock but Animal breaks it and lands a series of elbows to the midsection. Smash rakes the eyes and tags in Ax to pound away. Snapmare by Ax and he applies his own reverse chinlock. Animal busts loose but Ax and Crush stop him and lay more beatings in on the fallen Road Warrior. Irish whip to the corner by Crush and Animal comes out with a clothesline. Warrior gets the hot tag and hammers away on Smash and clotheslines everything moving. LOD take out Ax & Crush while Warrior puts Smash away with the shoulder tackle and Big Splash at 13:08. **1/2 For a fun match, nothing special, but I also am Bias being a fan of both teams so it could be a lower rating if I put that aside. At least the LOD won a match on their spotlight, unlike The Rockers.
- The Legion Of Doom vs. Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji):
This is the Smash & Crush version of Demolition, making it officially dead as being the "New" [insert tag team name]. From a Wrestling Challenge taping as well. Following Survivor Series, Jack Tunney said Demolition must be limited to two members, so I'm wondering what happend to Ax. Animal and Crush start the match and Animal quickly slams the big man. Animal misses a dropkick and now Crush with a slam and he misses a leg drop. Hawk catches Smash with a clothesline as Animal connects with a belly to belly suplex, sending Crush out of the ring. Smash and Hawk are the legal men now Smash wants a test-of-strength. Hawk blocks a cheap shot and hammers away on Smash and mounts him in the corner for the ten punches of doom. Hawk with a running clothesline to Smash and he nails a diving shoulder block. Hawk reverses an armbar and nails Smash with a short arm clothesline. A Suplex attempt is blocked and Fuji trips up Hawk. Smash sends him to the outside where Fuji nails him across the spine with his cane. Crush chokes away on Hawk with his foot and sends him back in the ring where Smash continues to bring the pain and destruction. Fuji chokes Hawk with his cane behind the referee's back and Crush comes off the top rope with a double axe-handle. Crush with a bear-hug in the middle of the ring. Smash tags in to hammer on Hawk and clubs away at him. Snapmare by Smash and he twists the neck of Hawk. Double clubbing by Demolition on Hawk and Fuji cackles at ringside. Smash drops Hawk across the top rope and covers for two. The Demolition Decapitation connects but Animal pulls Crush off at two! Crush misses a clothesline and Hawk nails one of his own. Both team tag and Animal goes mideval on Smash's ass. Animal flips out of a double atomic drop and nails both men with clotheslines. Fuji canes Hawk on the leg to prevent the Doomsday Device. Smash clotheslines Animal from behind and connects with a back breaker. Crush with a knee drop off the top rope for two. Crush and Hawk brawl outside the ring while Smash nails Animal with a back suplex. Hawk whips Crush into the ring post and nails Smash with a clothesline from the top rope for three at 10:01! 3/4* Nothing special, as this was WAY after the feud meant anything (January 1991 apparently), and Demolition without Ax was like the Hart Foundation without Bret. Still, nothing totally bad, but nothing really stood out to warrant a high rating.
- Call Of The Action Match:
Shane Douglas vs. The Black Demon:
The Black Demon was Jose Luis Rivera, better known as Conquistador Number Whatever (editor's note: he was the one in the mask) and one half of the Shadows, a tag team from 1986-87 that seemed to have jobbed to the Young Stallions on every television taping. Taped for a Superstars episode on November 19th, 1990. Both men lockup and the Demon whips Douglas to the corner, but he reverses it. Douglas nails the Demon with an arm drag followed by a dropkick. Whip to the corner is reversed and Douglas comes out of the corner with a clothesline. Douglas with a wrist lock for a few moments and the Demon whips him off, and Douglas with a sunset flip for two. Back elbow by Douglas and he nails the Black Demon with a forearm. Irish whip and Douglas with a boot to the midsection followed by a brain buster suplex. Douglas calls for the end and nails a high cross body press from the top rope for three at 1:16. ** Holy crap, for a quick jobber squash it was pretty decent. For some reason, the cross body is called a flying crucifix. I seriously miss the days of these old squash matches, because they left the chances of [superstar #1] vs. [superstar #2] a fantasy match that you'd WANT to see, not a match you've seen over and over every week.
- Marty Jannetty vs. Paul Roma (w/ Hercules):
This is sometime between Summerslam & Survivor Series 1990, as Shawn Michaels was out getting knee surgery (which was used in an angle on SSlam where P&G attacked his knee with a steel chain) which resulted in Jannetty teaming up with several people like Shane Douglas & Jim Powers as the New Rockers on house shows. From Madison Square Garden, and possibly the same show as the Six-Man from earlier in the tape. Roma was calling himself "Romeo" for some reason. Jannetty dropkicks Roma into his partner before the match and slugs away at Roma. Delayed atomic drop by Jannetty and he mounts Roma in the corner for ten punches. Jannetty rams Roma's head into the buckle five times and nails a hurricanrana and continues hammering him with rights. Jannetty with a series of rounghouse rights, but Roma uses the tights to send him outside the ring. Roma with a knee to the midsection sends him off the apron again. Jannetty trips up Roma and drags him outside. Roma rakes the eyes and rams Jannetty's back into the ring apron. Back in the ring and Roma stomps away at Jannetty. Irish whip and Jannetty with a sunset flip. Jannetty goes onto the apron and slides between the legs and nails a series of rights. Irish whip and Roma clubs Jannetty across the back of the neck and he chokes away. Roma with a whip to the buckles and Jannetty takes a nice bump on the second one. Roma to the top rope and he nails an axe-handle across the back for two. Roma with a super-delayed series of back breaker and nails a running powerslam a la Davey Boy Smith. Roma covers Jannetty after about a minute and it only gets two. Irish whip and Jannetty reverses an arm drag with a back slide for two. Roma stomps away at the head of Jannetty and Jannetty catches him with a small package for two. Roma slaps on a reverse chinlock to stop his momentum. Jannetty gets back on his feet and hammers the midsection of Roma. Clothesline is ducked but Roma connects a second attempt and Jannetty does the Hennig-sell. Roma goes back to the chinlock. Jannetty fights back up and rams Roma into the buckle several times. Jannetty reverses a whip to the corner but eats buckle on a splash. Roma drops an elbow across the back of the neck and slaps on a sleeper hold. Jannetty gets back on his feet with a series of elbows and he hammers away on Roma with rights. Jannetty blocks a suplex and nails his own snap version. Both men nail roundhouse rights and Jannetty with an inverted atomic drop followed by a clothesline. Irish whip by Jannetty and he nails a diving back elbow. Irish whip and Jannetty with a blow to the midsection followed by a knee lift. Whip to the buckle and Jannetty catches him with a boot to the face followed by a bulldog headlock off the second rope. Jannetty to the top rope and he nails the fist drop all the way across the ring for two. Hercules pulls Jannetty outside, so Marty hammers away on him and rams his head into the ring. Crescent Kick by Jannetty and he scoops up Roma, but Hercules trips him up, and Roma falls on top for three at 13:42. **3/4 Pretty good match, but a slow portion in the middle by Roma prevented a 3-star plus rating. After the match Jannetty argues the result and the referee teases reversing the decision, but doesn't and Roma is the official winner of the match. Jannetty attacks Hercules for a moment, but Power & Glory lay a beating on him until the referees stop them.
- Fan Favorites Match:
Big Boss Man vs. "Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase (w/ Virgil):
Taped three weeks before Summerslam from the Providence Civic Center for a Superstars taping, and hopefully it will be good. The people who "picked" this match are oddly wearing a lot of Boss Man stuff and carrying around his merchandise. No way THEY can be plants. Ted Dibiase's Summer resident is some place in Massachusetts. Boss Man chases Dibiase around the ring with nightstick in hand, but gets nothing in. Dibiase stalls outside the ring to start the match. Boss Man avoids a sneak attack and rams Dibiases head into the buckle ten times. Boss Man unloads with a series of rights and lefts followed by an inverted atomic drop and roundhouse right. To the outside they go and Boss Man continues beating the crap out of the M$M. Boss Man introduces Dibiase's face into the steel steps and chokes him with his belt followed by a few lashing. Boss Man rakes the back of Dibiase and nails a headbutt. Boss Man misses a big splash allowing Dibiase to get in a blow with the nightstick behind the referee's back. Dibiase hammers away on Boss Man with forearms, sending him outside the ring. Dibiase follows and whips him into the ring post with a loud smack. Dibiase sends Boss Man into the ring steps now and tosses him back into the ring. Boss Man comes back with a choke but Dibiase with some more kidney blows puts him back down on the canvas. Dibiase with a double axe-handle off the top rope followed by a series of stomps to the face. Irish whip to the corner and Dibiase rams Boss Man's back into the buckle. Irish whip by Dibiase and he nails a clothesline. Boss Man comes back with a flurry of blows, putting Dibiase down. Boss Man is given a low blow it seems by Dibiase. Irish whip and Dibiase with a bear hug. Boss Man battles out and a double clothesline puts them both down again. Boss Man catches Dibiase off the top rope with a blow to the midsection followed by a series of clotheslines. Inverted atomic drop and clothesline by Boss Man and he brings Virgil into the ring and nails a big boot. Boss Man with a double noggin knocker and a clothesline sends Virgil out. The referee calls for the DQ at 10:59 while Boss Man atomic drops Dibiase out of the ring. The referee gives TED DIBIASE the win, because of Boss Man dragging Virgil into the ring and beating his ass for no apparent reason. After the match Dibiase & Virgil double team Boss Man and fetch the stick. Trash is tossed in the ring while Dibiase walks around with it. Boss Man recovers and chases both men off with it. ** Nothing special, but it was decent for a match from the time frame.
- WWF-Intercontinental Championship Match:
Mr. Perfect (c) (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts:
This is taped two weeks or so before Summerslam, explaining Perfect being champion after the first match on the tape had Tornado as champ. Roberts looks wasted here. Jake goes after Heenan so Perfect hammers awya from behind. Irish whip to the corner and Perfect misses a splash. Roberts pounds away on the arm of Hennig and applies a wrist lock. Roberts with an armbar and he drives the knee into Hennig's elbow a lot of times that I couldn't keep track. Heenan distracts Roberts every now and then by going after the bag he keeps Dameon in. Roberts keeps the armbar applied and takes Perfect down to the canvas. Roberts turns it into a hammerlock and drives a knee into the ribs of Perfect. Roberts applies another armbar and goes back to the hammerlock. Perfect reverses but eats an elbow soon after. Repeat the last portion and an elbow sends Perfect to the outside. Roberts pulls Perfect back into the ring and applies ANOTHER armbar. Perfect rakes the eyes and whips Roberts to the ropes. Roberts tops and suckers Perfect to walk into a back drop to the outside. Perfect takes over thanks to Heenan and hammers away on Roberts, ramming his arm around the post. Perfect tosses Roberts back into the ring and stomps Roberts midsection. Perfect with a spinning toe hold....but to the arm so it's a spinning arm hold I guess, and uses the ropes for leverage, which REALLY wouldn't help in this type of move I don't think. Perfect with an armbar and he puts Roberts down. This match is nothing but Boring. Roberts whips Perfect to the ropes but a boot to the midsection puts him down for two. More working of the arm. Roberts catches Hennig wih a big boot in the corner followed by a series of jabs, with the twisting over-sell. Roberts hammers away on Perfect more and nails the short-arm clothesline. Roberts calls for the end, but Heenan runs in for the DQ at 10:23. Roberts goes for the DDT on him but Perfect saves and hammers away. Heenan drags the Snake bag into the middle of the ring and Perfect goes for the Perfect-Plex, but Roberts blocks it and nails a nasty DDT to Perfect instead. Heenan saves Perfect from the Snake Effect and Roberts celebrates in the ring. DUD Match totally blew. I couldn't imagine a match with two good workers to be THIS bad.
Final Thoughts: Well...some matches were good, but seriously, too much on this tape sucked ass. WWF held HUNDREDS of matches in this time frame, and they couldn't find EIGHT matches that were good-great? I seriously think they either made tapes good by accident, or bad intentionally. This tape
