WWF Compiliation Review: (April-May 1993 Television):
Another compilation tape, rounding up the gaps I'm missing. 1993 sucked to most fans, but for some reason it was one of my favorite years. Hulk Hogan had become World Champion again, and although Yokozuna & Fuji argued the win, Jack Tunney made it official to the delight of Hulkamaniacs. But Hulk ran his course by now and the fans started turning on him. Bret Hart was put in Limbo, and some guy named Shawn Michaels was quickly making a name for himself.
- Virgil vs. Giant Gonzalez (w/ Harvey Wippleman):
Nice way to open the tape wouldn't you say? Virgil was basically an over jobber, and Gonzalez was still feuding with The Undertaker. Virgil get's in a little bit of offense that consist of him hitting Gonzalez with jabs and dancing around. Gonzalez takes control soon after with ugly ass punches and chokes. Gonzalez dominates the rest of the "match" and finishes off Virgil and his career of meaning anything with an awful Chokeslam. -* Not a good way to start a tape off in my books. Gives a bad first taste in your mouth.
- Scott Steiner (w/ Rick Steiner) vs. Irwin R. Schyster (w/ Ted Dibiase):
Another case of the half-tag team title matches. In this case, Money Inc. are the Tag Team Champions and the Steiners were hot on their trails. Sadly though, The Steiners never won the titles on Television, meaning House Shows MEANT something back in 1993. Bold prediction is the Double DQ spot where the partners come in on the action. Steiner out-wrestles I.R.S to start with arm bars and go behinds, and I.R.S takes a breather. IRS with some kicks to the midsection, but Steiner catches him off the ropes with a powerslam. Dibiase distracts Steiner long enough though as IRS heads outside for more stalling. Back in the ring and Steiner with a headlock and series of shoulder blocks. IRS tries a drop toe hold but Steiner puts him in an armbar. IRS fights out with elbows to the side of the head and he nails him with a kick in the head. Suplex is blocked and Steiner nails his own for two. I.R.S runs again and he and Dibiase talk strategy. I.R.S in and Steiner controls a lockup until Irwin rakes the eyes. Steiner tossed to the outside and Dibiase nails him with a clothesline, and here comes Rick. I.R.S hammers Steiner and nails a piledriver for two. I.R.S with a chinlock, and that takes more time. Steiner battles back with punches, and he walks into an Irwin back breaker. I.R.S slowly goes upstairs, and he meets Scott's boot on the trip down. Steiner fights back, keeping Irwin up by holding the tie (or in Heenan's words, his tongue). Steiner nails the Double Underhook, but Dibiase runs in for the DQ, giving Scott the win. **1/2 Money Inc. double team until Rick gets involved, but it's the Beverly Brothers turn to run in and attack, but heel miscommunication runs afoul and the two heel teams fight as we head out.
- Friar Ferguson vs. Chris Duffy:
This is another Wrestlecrapper in the form of Mike Shaw's gimmick of Friar Ferguson. To think this gimmick was better than the next one he had is just sad and pathetic on what WWF's braintrust was thinking up. Fergusons theme music is a bit odd to say the least, as he comes out sprinkling water on the crowd. Ferguson's offense is basically kicks and punches, and he finishes the jobber off with his ass shaking butt drop (or the Modified 69 position) to pick up an easy win. DUD, if I had to rate the non-match portion, this would skyrocket into the negatives.
- Virgil vs. Razor Ramon:
Virgils back and on more jobbing duties. Ramon is again in limbo here as his Main Event status was yanked away in favor of Yoko-fuckin-Zuna and a upper card push for the Giant-Talentless-Hack Gonzalez. Virgil controls the opening lockups, but Ramon makes it to the ropes to escape any punishment. Ramon with a few shots but Virgil catches him with a small package out of nowhere for two. Virgil is fed up with Ramon's hiding in the ropes so he clocks him one. Bad move. Ramon beats the ever loving shit out of Virgil and applies the...GASP! Abdominal Stretch! Virgil with a hip toss to reverse the hold by he misses an elbow drop. Ramon catches Virgil with a series of scoop slams, and slaps him across the face. Ramon chokes Virgil across the ropes and sends him to the buckle. Virgil catches him with a boot on the charge and nails a clothesline. A second misses though and Ramon takes him down hard. Razor's Edge later and it's all over for Ted Dibiase's former slave. 3/4* Nothing special here, but it was better than Virgils first match on the tape.
- Giant Gonzalez vs. L.A. Gore:
Why did I tape these jobber matches? Re-arrange Gore's first name and it's Bill Clinton's Vice-President and Democrat runner for President of the United States in 2000. He should have won damn it. Gore is afraid of Gonzalez, so The Giant drags him in the ring by his head over the top rope and chokes. Gonzalez with a bad clothesline and more choking. Kicks by the Giant and he chokes some more. Chokeslam ends this crap after about 2 minutes. DUD I hope to GOD I don't have much more of this stuff.
- Non-Title Match: Money Inc. vs. The Beverly Brothers:
Money Inc. jump the Beverly Brothers to start and that ends with Blake surviving. Well that was unlikely. Dibiase starts with him and they trade off armbars. Dibiase with a shoulder block followed by a scoop slam. Blake returns the slam and Beau tags in and he works the arm. Blake back in and he applies some arm scissors. Dibiase breaks free, but Blake pulls the hair to keep the hold on. Both teams play heel & face, totally screwing up any crowd response to what the hell is going on. Referee constantly misses Dibiase's tags to Irwin, making them the faces at the time. Beverlies double team Dibiase while the referee restrains Schyster. Dibiase has enough and plants an elbow in Beaus mouth and tags in I.R.S. Blake controls I.R.S with clubbin rights and a slam for two. Armbar applies, but I.R.S powers up, only to be pulled down by the suspenders and Beau chokes him with the tag rope in the corner. Money Inc. trade headlocks on Beau after the commercial. Dibiase & Beau trade blows until Beau slams Dibiase's face into the mat. I.R.S tags in again but he's nailed with a flying clothesline from Beau and both are down. I guess the Bev's are faces now. Dibiase in and he is caught with a neck breaker, and Blake finally tags in and he pummels Dibiase. Tag back to Beau (WHAT?!) and he does the same. Double teaming on Dibiase continues but heel miscom. time as Blake nails Beau with a clothesline by mistake, and Dibiase executes a small package for the win to end this shit. 1/2* Just because I hate giving DUDs to Dibiase. Match was all over the place and the crowd couldn't give a shit what was going on.
- King Of The Ring announcement is made. On June the PPV will debut and will feature a single elimination tournament of 8 participants. To determine those 8, Qualifying Matches have been scheduled. Bret Hart, due to his controversial loss at WM and overall greatness, recieved a bye into the elite eight. Also, Hulk Hogan defends the World Title against Yokozuna.
- Mr. Perfect vs. Damian Demento:
If Demento didn't suck so much this might be good. They lockup, but that leads nowhere. Both men run around the ring until Perfect nails a running dropkick. Demento has a meeting with his hand on the outside, and re-enters soon after. Demento with an elbow to the head and some odd roundhouse rights. Back drop is prevented Perfect nails the running knee lift. Perfect though is tossed outside by the tights, landing on the camera man. Demento with a claw hold and he tosses Perfect outside again. Demento continues the assault but Perfect comes back and they trade chops. Perfect wins it and nails a knee lift, and nails the float over neck snap. Perfect finishes the match off soon after with the Perfect-Plex. * For Perfect's efforts, but Demento sucks.
- Crush vs. "The Narcissist" Lex Luger:
I remember marking out like a Mo'Fo'er when the match first aired, cheering so hard for Crush to be the first to defeat Luger. The announcers go over Lugers loaded forearm, so you can guess who wins this match. Both men lock up for a test of strength, with Crush winning, but Luger nails a boot to the midsection and he puts the boots to him. Crush comes back with his own kick and he does the gorilla press slam on Luger! Body Slam again by Crush and Luger rolls outside to catch a rest. Crush nails a dropkick and takes Luger down to the canvas with a headlock. Back from commercial and Crush connects with a belly-to-belly suplex for two! Crush whips Luger to the buckle, but misses a charge, and Luger with a high knee sends Crush outside. Luger follows and hammers Crush, then rams his back into the ring. Luger back in with some clubbing shots and he poses to the crowd a bit as well. Luger with a bearhug and he catches Crush with a powerslam for two. Suplex attempt is blocked by Crush and he nails his own. Crush with a backdrop followed by a body slam and leg drop, but that only gets two. Crush with the cranium crunch!!! Luger won't give up, so Crush lifts him in the air again and slams him back down with it. Luger passes out basically, until Doink comes out to distract Crush, who breaks the hold. Luger recuperates and nails Crush with the forearm, sending him outside, where he is counted out, giving Luger the cheap win. ** Decent match here, as Crush was working his ass off in hopes of getting a good push. We all know what happend there.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Bob Backlund vs. "The Narcissist" Lex Luger:
Wow, I thought Bob Backlund vanished from wrestling in the summer and fall of 1993, as he didn't do ANYTHING realy, and didn't appear on PPV (exception of his 30 second RR apearence) until SURVIVOR SERIES 1994!!! Luger does his forever introduction and poses in front of the mirrors. Backlund out-wrestles Luger to start with armbars and leg takedowns. Headlock by Backlund and luger escapes to take a breather. Luger takes over with rights, and works in his awesome SLAM for two. Luger with a chinlock to stall time, and Backlund begins to fight free. Both men fight to the outside, where Luger nails him from out of nowhere with the loaded forearm, and of course, Backlund is counted-out, allowing Luger to qualify. DUD Nothing match as Backlund had it toned way down for this.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Mr. Perfect vs. Doink The Clown:
From WWF Superstars. Doink comes out with an umbrella. Doink is half-out of his wig-mask ... as Perfect enters, we see Doink tying his mask on the big screen. Hennig stops to talk with a fan and Doink jumps into screen, nailing Perfect and sending him down. A brawl starts on the outside as the bell sounds. Perfect takes control, working on Borne's left leg then sending him over the top with a chop. The announcers wonder if we'll see multiple Doinks as another brawl on the outside ensues. Back inside, Perfect again focuses on the left leg of Doink then sends him to the outside again, this time with a knee lift. After the break, Perfect is on the outside. We're told that Doink rammed him into the ring post. Doink comes off the top rope to the outside, hitting Perfect with an axe handle. Doink off the top rope again with another ax handle. A very stiff slugest ends when Perfect hooks a small package for the two count. Another slugfest and Perfect ducks the punch with a backslide. Another two count. A roll-up results in what sounded like a two count by the ref but Doink is out. After a failed pinfall attempt after a suplex, Perfect hits Doink with one of the loudest chops and another stiff series of slaps culminates with a Perfect Plex at the bell ... "The Time limit has expired." Perfect argues with the ref as Doink slithers out of the ring and mugs for the camera, acting a combination of happy and irrate. **1/2 Pretty good match, but they had better ones later on.
- WWF-Intercontinental Championship Match:
Shawn Michaels (c) vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan:
Crowd is hot for this one and TOTALLY want to see Duggan win it. Michaels hides outside for a while as the crowd chants U-S-A! Duggan wins the lockup with rights and nails a series of clotheslines to send Michaels back outside. Duggan nails a series of rights and Michaels outside again! Back in the ring and Duggan whips Michaels into the corner for the flair flip. BAck from break and Michaels is outside. Michaels rakes the eyes back in and chokes Duggan across the rope. Michaels with knees to the chest and he chokes some more. Another rake to the eyes and comes off the top rope with a double axe-handle. Michaels with a headlock, and Duggan elbows his way out. He sends HBK into the corner, but eats boot and he nails a string of elbow drops for two. Another headlock applied but Duggan breaks free and hammers the shit out of Shawn. Duggan with a shoulderblock and Michaels comes back with a knee to the midsection, and continues the beating. Hacksaw comes back in and Michaels does more nothing. Duggan comes back with elbows and nails the mounted punches. Helicopter slam by Duggan and Michaels heads outside. They brawl some more and Michaels is eventually counted out, giving Duggan the win but not the title. DUD Totally SHITTY match. This match had a hot crowd too, but Duggan just phoned it in here. Duggan protests the win though which leads to more crap.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
"El Matador" Tito Santana vs. Razor Ramon:
Winner of this gets the #8 seed that means nothing, but the winner also faces Bret Hart in the Quarter-Finals on the KOR PPV. Santana is going through the motions at this point as he all but disappeared from T.V since the latter part of the winter. Ramon sneak attacks Santana to start with roundhouse rights, but Chico comes back with his own and a series of arm drags sends the Bad Guy to the outside for some stallin and bawlin. Ramon back in and Santana with a headlock. Shouldrblocks follow and Ramon takes another breather. Ramon comes back with a thumb to the eyes and works the back...and here's the abdominal stretch. Santana mounts a comeback with the flying jalupeņo, but Ramon is in the ropes. Santana heads upstairs with a cross-body press, but Ramon rolls through it and thats enough for the win. 1/2* Nothing match again. Superstars was definitely not the work-rate show it use to be.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Papa Shango:
It seems like most of the Qualifying Round losers were on their way out at the time, and this one features two, so someone has to win. Shango no longer has his voodoo stick to blow sparks and steam anymore. Duggan still has the 2x4 so I'll predict a win from him. Both men exchange blows and Duggan applies a headlock and nails a shoulder block. Shango rakes the eyes of course and sends Duggan outside with powerful kicks to the fat gut. Shango continues his offense of choking and punching for a few more minutes and Duggan makes the comeback, eventually nailing the 3-Point Stance clothesline to pick up the win and to advance in the tournament. 1/4* Next, Please.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Typhoon vs. Bam Bam Bigelow (w/ Luna Vachon):
From Monday Night Raw. Both men lockup, resulting in nothing. Both men off the ropes with shoulderblocks, but no one budges. Typhoon ends up slamming the big man and applying an armbar. Bigelow comes back with another slam, but misses an elbow drop. Typhoon with another arm bar, but Bigelow reverses it with a big back suplex. Typhoon is up fast though and he sends Bigelow to the outside. Cat and mouse time so Bigelow stomps away at Typhoon as he re-enters the ring. Bigelow rams Typhoon into the buckle a few times and applies a chinlock of doom. Bigelow kicks away at Typhoon and brings him down with the headlock again. Typhoon comes back with rights, but misses a corner avalanche, and Bigelow nails Tatankas finisher!!! Bigelow goes upstairs and finishes it off with the Diving Headbutt to advance. 3/4* Another nothing match, but Bigelow tried.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Tatanka vs. Giant Gonzalez (w/ Harvey Wippleman):
Jesus Christ all Mighty, another Gonzalez match. Lord knows this will suck. Tatanka is still undefeated after over a year, and Gonzalez has yet to be pinned, and he still sucks major ass. Tatanka tries his best with the chops and running, but Gonzalez catches him with a choke. Gonzalez with some awful chops, and this shit drags on. Tatanka starts Indian-Up wit chops, but Gonzalez catches him with another choke in the corner, but won't let go, so it's a DQ ending, giving Tatanka the win. DUD I don't think I ever saw a Match over DUD with Gonzalez in it in singles matches.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Mr. Perfect vs. Doink The Clown:
Part TWO, and it's from Wrestling Challenge. Doink comes to the ring eating popcorn and spraying a little boy with a flower. Perfect jumps him from behind and unloads with a series of chops & punches, followed by tossing doink into the steps. Perfect starts with a Grapevine, Indian Death Lock & Knee Stomps, all to injure doinks knee. An eye rake dos nothing as Perfect applies another grapevine, stepover leglock, and the Figure four. Doink gets to the ropes and with the momentum sends Perfect to the outside. 3 shots to the steps plus a series of elbowlocks and wristlocks take alot of time. Perfect breaks out and exchanges a series of slaps, with Doink getting the best of it. Perfect CLOBBERS doink with a stiff right as the bell goes off to declare this a time limit draw. After the bell Perfect connects with a Perfect Plex, and challenges doink for 5 more minutes. ***1/4 Pretty decent action, but a cheap ending again.
- The Kid Vs. Razor Ramon:
Ramon tosses the toothpick in Kid's face and shoves him to the canvas. Slaps to the chest of the kid by the bad guy followed by a HUGE hip toss. Modified Abdominal Stretch by Ramon looks like a porno position. Ramon catches The Kid in mid air and nails a fallaway slam. (not like Tatankas) Kid to the buckle, but he dodges a rush, and nails a moonsault for the pin!!!! 1/2* for historic purpose.
- Intercontinental Championship Match:
Shawn Michaels (c) Vs. Marty Jannetty:
This at first I thought was the PWI MOTY for 1993, but in actuality it was the rematch to the rematch where Shawn Michaels won the title back and debuted Kevin Nash as Diesel. They lockup and Shawn Michaels pounds on Jannetty in the corner and makes him eat buckle, and vice versa. School boy by Jannetty gets 2. Side headlock by Shawn and Jannetty with a sunset flip gets 2. Jannetty with a headlock now and a clothesline followed by another sending Michaels outside. Baseball slide by Jannetty and he skins the cat, then comes down with a pescado. Marty posts Shawn outside and they go back inside. Shawn with a kick to the face but he misses the super-kick and Jannetty with a Japanese armdrag and head scissors for 2. Back Body drop by Jannetty and Shawn flips in the corner to the floor. Shawn tries taking a walk but Perfect chases him back into the ring. Back from break and Jannetty gets stunned across the top rope and Shawn goes to a chokehold. Series of jabs by the champion and a foot choke in the corner. Michaels uses the ropes for leverage to drop knees into the sternum of Jannetty and snapmares him, followed by a headlock. Michaels whips Jannetty to the buckle but gets caught and is sent via sling shot into the steel post for a 2 count. Neck snap by Jannetty and he pounds on him and scores a flying elbow. Irish whip and Jannetty with a powerslam for 2! Cross Body is flirted but Michaels nails one off the top rope instead for 2. Atomic Drop is reversed but Jannetty rolls up Michaels for 2, Michaels rolls up Jannetty for 2 as well with the help of tight puling. Super-kick lays out Jannetty and Michaels jaws with Perfect. Mr. P tosses his towel into Michaels face and Marty Jannetty cradles Michaels for three and the Intercontinental Championship. ****. Great match. This was Jannetty's only singles gold in the WWF.
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Kamala (w/ Rev. Slick) vs. Mr. Hughes (w/ Harvey Wippleman):
On Superstars, Crush & Shawn Michaels wrestled to a Double Count-Out, so the 8th slot after this match is still open. This is the blackhole match of the Tournament, cause either way, the winner sucks hard and has no talent what so ever. Winner here faces (TBA Qualifyer) so it's kind of a toss up, but Hughes was getting pushed. Sorta. The entire match consists of Hughes punching and choking Kamala, who makes the comeback, only to see Kim Chee in the entrance way and chase him, counting himself out to let Mr. Hughes advance. DUD. We Need another great match damn it!
- King Of The Ring Qualifying Match:
Mr. Perfect vs. Doink The Clown:
This is the 3rd and final match to decide who will be in the KOTR tournament, since they wrestled to two time limit draws on superstars and wrestling challenge. Doink ambushes Perfect and chokes him with his own towel. Perfect back up and he hammers back and clotheslines Doink with the towel too. Chop by Perfect and they exchange rights. Leg takedown and knee drop to the leg of Doink. Spinning Toe Hold by Perfect and Doink cries in pain. Perfect puts the boots to Doinks knee and posts his leg. Back from break and Perfect is sent to the arena floor. Armbar by Doink and a fireman's carry takeover, but its reversed into a head scissors by Perfect. Doink is like Jell-O there's always room for more. Doink back to his feet and he stomps away at Mr. Perfect. Armbar by Doink and he takes Perfect down but its reversed again into a headlock. Leg snapped back by Mr. Perfect and he slaps the clown a little. Indian Death Lock by Mr. Perfect has Doink in a world of trouble. Perfect gets sent to the floor and Doink rams Hennigs shoulder into the ring post. Perfect uses some amateur wrestling skills to take down Doink and kicks away. Doink back in control wraps perfects arm around the ring post. Foot choke by Doink and a modified hammer lock. Slam by Doink with Perfect landing on his arm for a two count. Back from break again and Perfect with an atomic drop and clothesline. Running clothesline sends Doink to the floor, and the Doinks switch off! The fresh Doinks hair is completely puffy and has new face paint on. Snapmare blocked by Doink and he puts the pounding to Perfect. Monkey Flip by the clown and an Irish whip, but Perfect with the Perfect-Plex wins it to advance FINALLY. ***1/2 The two Doinks lay a beating on Perfect until Crush comes out to clean house of Doinks.
- WWF-Intercontinental Championship Match:
Marty Jannetty (c) vs. Bam Bam Bigelow (w/ Luna Vachon):
This is Jannetty's only title defense on television that I know of. Bigelow is feuding with Tatanka so this match really means nothing for him, and is guranteed a loss. Sherri & Luna fight on the outside, so Jannetty seperates them, allowing Bigelow to beat the crap out of him. Bigelow hammers him in the ring, and Jannetty comes back with a series of chops, and another off the top rope. Jannetty works the arm with a hammerlock, but Bigelow comes back with a headbutt. Jannetty avoids a back drop with some flip action, but walks right into a bear hug. Bigelow slams Jannetty into the buckle several times while having the hold applied. Jannetty comes back with a flying head scissors and nails another. A third attempt is blocked and both men go down. Back from break, and Bigelow applies a chinlock. Eye rake and Bigelow with a dropkick for two. Bigelow sends Jannetty to the buckle but eats boot on the way in and Jannetty unloads on Bigelow. Chops by Jannetty followed by a dropkick gets two. Bigelow comes back with a full nelson and nails a shoulder breaker. Bigelow goes upstairs, but Sherri holds his foot, preventing him from making it, and Jannetty slams down the big man. They head outside and Jannetty with a plancha! Bigelow comes back with rights and sends Jannetty into the ring, but Sherri again interferes, and Bigelow is counted out thanks to her distractions. Jannetty retains in his first last and only title defense. ** Average match. Could have been better considering it was Jannetty and a talented big man.
- "El Matador" Tito Santana vs. Adam Bomb:
Coming to the end of the tape, and it's not a good ending at that. Tito works on the arm to start with a wrist-lock, and they head into the ropes. Bomb comes back with kicks and punches, and follows it up with a powerslam. Adam misses a series of elbow drops, and Santana applies another wrist-lock. Bomb whips Santana to the buckle, but misses a charge, and Santana with an arm drag. Santana catches him with a sunset flip for two. Bomb up quick with a clothesline, and kicks him in the taco gut. Bomb chokes Santana and kicks him some more. Bomb whips Santana back and forth to the buckles and nails a suplex. Santana tries a comeback and nails the Flying Jalupeņo out of thin air but it only gets two. Bomb exits and gets on the apron, and nails a sling shot clothesline, picking up an easy win from jobber Santana. * One more match to go.
- Rick Steiner & Billy Gunn vs. Irwin R. Schyster & Fatu:
The odd pairings of two tag teams mixed in as one. Fatu and Gunn start. Gunn & Steiner control with armbars and punches. Fatu with an elbow to Steiner turns the tide and I.R.S tags in. Fatu works on Steiner in the corner behind the referee's back. I.R.S runs into Fatu by mistake as Steiner ducks. Break time and we come back to Afa eating...something. Rick is tossed outside, and Dibiase & Samu work him over. Fatu continues the punishment, and we sleep. Gunn eventually gets a hot tag, and unloads on everyone, and he takes out Dibiase. I.R.S though sneaks up from behind Gunn and nails the Write Off, and that gets the win for his team. 1/2* Crap-tastic Match.
Final Thoughts: Well...God this tape is weak. Outside of a few good matches there is a LOT of crap. Crap, Thy name is Giant Gonzalez. The Qualifying Round of the King of the Ring tournament was pretty crappy, with the exceptions of Doink & Mr. Perfect. A few debuts occured in 1-2-3 Kid & Adam Bomb, as well as the short-lived Friar Ferguson, and Marty Jannetty was given a quick run as the upper-midcard champion.
