SPORTS-(PIRATES)
August 22- I wish I could follow the Bucs more, but I live
in Denver and it's tough to get any of their games. Aside
from the occasional game against the Rockies, Cubs or Braves, I never see
them. Their games are available in RealAudio online, but they
always start around 5 pm, when I'm usually wanting to get my ass home.
I don't think I'm missing much. They're about 16 games out of first and
still haven't played a meaningful game since Stan Belinda threw a meatball
to Francisco Cabrera. They had a brief flirtation with the division lead
in 1997, but lost out to the Astros in the long run. Oh well,
there's always the bigger scene to talk about, meaning baseball in
general.

Larry Walker hit the DL, finally. Ending the ongoing elbow saga of the
greatest pussy to ever play baseball. Recall in June, when during a game
against the Giants, Walker got brushed back with a pitch. "I woulda gone
out to the mound, if my elbow wasn't acting up". Sure, and
you woulda singlehandedly won the division if you had any
testicles, right? This from a guy who just BARELY qualified for
the batting title last year, while his team sank toward last place.
He didn't care, he got enough plate appearances to get his
precious title and pad his stats. Same thing happened the year before (98).
This from a guy who routinely goes 2 for 3, with two singles and no RBI,
and then removes himself from the lineup in the 7th. "I got my hits, eh"...
||... How much is Mike Piazza paying Sports Illustrated? They
ran this IMMENSE ass-kissing article last week. Detailing how
wonderful Piazza is and how he was "the greatest hitting catcher of all time".
As we know, "all time" usually means "the last few years"...||...
Tony Gwynn once said that August is the only realistic time to talk
about hitting .400. It's August 22nd and Todd Helton is at .398. If it
were any other player, the national media would be all over it.
People will say he's a Coors Field creation, which is unfair to
Helton, who went something like 18 for 34 on a recent ROAD trip...
||... This may be a stretch, but today's Cincinnati- Philadelphia
game could be a preview for the 2003 Cy Young. Both Rob Bell and
Bruce Chen are having typical rookie years, but I wouldn't be
surprised if both of these guys make something of themselves in the
future. Bell has some nasty stuff and Chen may finally hit his stride,
away from the shadow of the Atlanta Pitching Factory. Of course,
both could be in the Northern League playing for the St. Paul
Saints in three years...||...Tonight was my last softball game of
the "season" and probably for quite awhile. It seems more like
a bad job than fun, the past few weeks. To top it off, I even
pulled the hamstring muscle in my right leg. Now I can walk around
the office all day saying "yeah, I woulda racked ass on their pitcher...
if it wasn't for my hammy..."
