Tales of the Bargain Bin   |   Hypertime Arena   |   TV Stuff   |   GI Joe

Marvel Two-in-One #40 (1978)
Writer: Marv Wolfman
Artists: Bob Hall & Frank Giacoia

Thing and Hercules vs Manduu Picked this up as an add-on impulse buy through eBay. I bought an old Avengers comic from a guy and decided to tack on an extra 75 cents for this rag, through the "View Other Items From This Seller" link. Did both of us a favor-- I got something extra to read and he got to move a comic that never would have sold on its own. Although, who knows...maybe there IS someone out there who would buy a comic for 75 cents and pay 3.95 shipping?!! I'm sure he/she probably works for Mile High Comics.

This is a straightforward team-up with two guys who like to smash things. Thing is volunteering at a youth camp and shuts the kids up by telling his flashback story. The flashback gimmick doesn't add much to the story, as it takes up maybe 5 panels and allows Thing to trade verbal jabs with the snotty kids.

On to the flahsback... Thing is out, sulking around Manhattan, after the Human Torch has just destroyed his new weight set. Hercules and his flying chariot suddenly swoop down and grab him. For only the 8,741st time, someone has attacked Olympus and captured Zeus. This time, it's a group of giants who, luckily, are easy to track down. The group consists of Y'androgg the big cow, Manduu the big goat and Krokarr the big bird guy.

Thing and Zeus run through the giants' castle, fighting red tigers and flying snakes along the way. They beat the snot out of each giant and eventually rescue Zeus. Throughout the story, Thing bickers about Herc's speech.... but I've always considered Benjy J. Grimm the master of slang, so it's kinda' funny to see him play off of Herc and his Old English speech. In one fight, Herc exclaims "For Zeus! For Olympus!" while Thing shouts "Fer' the Luvva Pete!". Herc gets another brilliant exclamation with: "By Hippolyte's Girdle!"

Summary:REAL basic, beat-em-up superhero story. Wacky dialgoue, larger-than-life plot and giant goats.
